Privacy Policy

The short version
- We only collect what we need to run Neighbourhood, and we never sell your information.
- No advertising trackers. We use one cookie, to keep you signed in.
- Card details go to Paystack, never to us.
- You can see, change or delete your information, and delete your account from your profile.
1. What we collect
- Account details: your name, email address, phone number, @username, profile picture (if you add one) and whether you are a tenant or landlord. Your password is stored only as a secure scrambled hash that no one can read, including us. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from Google.
- Landlord details: the type of ID you said you hold, your listings and photos, lawyer details and proof documents (if you add a legal fee), and the bank account for payouts. For the bank account we keep the bank name, the account name, the last 4 digits and a reference from Paystack. The full account number is passed to Paystack to set up your payouts.
- What you do on Neighbourhood: messages with landlords or tenants, bookings, tenancies, payments (amounts, dates, references, and your answer about inspecting the home), community posts, photos, videos, comments, likes, reviews, reports and notifications.
- Location, only when you ask: if you tap "Locate me" on the Hotels page, your browser shares your location so we can find hotels near you. We use it for that search and don't save it.
- Technical information: your IP address and basic request details, kept briefly to stop spam and abuse and to keep the service secure.
2. Why we use it
- To run your account and show your listings, posts and reviews.
- To connect tenants and landlords, process payments and send receipts.
- To send account emails, such as confirming your email or resetting your password, and in-app notifications.
- To keep people safe: checking lawyer documents, handling reports, and stopping fraud, scams and agency fees.
- To meet legal and accounting duties, such as keeping payment records.
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, we rely on: providing the service you asked for (your account, listings, bookings and payments), our legitimate interest in keeping Neighbourhood safe, your consent where we ask for it (such as your location), and legal duties.
3. Who can see what
- Everyone on Neighbourhood: your name, @username, profile picture, community posts and reviews, and landlords' listings.
- Signed-in users: a landlord's phone number on their listings.
- The other person in a booking or chat: your messages, and your phone number once a booking is accepted.
- Tenants paying you: the name on your payout bank account.
- Neighbourhood admins: what they need to review reports, documents and payments.
4. Companies we share with
We share only what each service needs to do its job for us:
- Paystack processes payments and sends money to landlords. It receives your name, email, phone number, the amount and, for landlords, the payout bank account.
- Our email service (Brevo or Resend) sends account emails to your email address.
- Google, if you choose "Continue with Google", and for place and hotel search when that is turned on.
- OpenStreetMap services for maps and hotel search, which receive the area you searched.
- Our hosting provider, which stores Neighbourhood's data on our behalf.
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone from fraud or harm. We never sell your information or share it for advertising.
5. Cookies and storage
We use one cookie, which keeps you signed in. Your browser also stores small things on your own device, like the homes you've saved and a copy of the app so it loads quickly. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open. Notifications are cleared after 90 days. Reset and confirmation links expire within two days. Payment records are kept for as long as Nigerian tax and financial rules require, even after an account is deleted.
7. Deleting your account
You can delete your account from your profile page ("Delete my account"). When you do:
- Your name, email, phone number, username, picture and password are removed straight away, and you are signed out everywhere.
- Your listings, community posts, comments, likes, reviews and notifications are removed.
- Messages you sent stay in the other person's inbox, shown as from "Deleted user", so they keep a record of what was agreed.
- Payment records are kept without your contact details, because the law requires them.
If you have a tenancy that is still running, or an upcoming stay, you'll need to sort that out first.
8. Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, you can ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or withdraw consent you gave. You can change most details yourself under "Edit details" on your profile. For anything else, contact us. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
9. Keeping it safe
We use secure connections, store passwords as one-way hashes, keep lawyer documents private to admins, sign you out on other devices when you reset your password, and limit how often sensitive actions can be tried. No system is perfect; if we ever find a breach that puts you at risk, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
10. Children
Neighbourhood is for people aged 18 and over. If you believe a child has made an account, contact us and we'll remove it.
11. Changes and contact
If we change this policy in an important way, we'll tell you in the app. Questions, requests or complaints about your information: hello@myneighbourhood.com.ng
